Glass Art Exhibition “BETWEEN SKY AND EARTH” by Indre Stulgaite-Kriukiene and Remigijus Kriukas

2017 November 24 @ 17:00 - 2018 January 6 @ 12:00

On November 24, 2017, an art glass exhibition “BetweenSky and Earth” was opened in Kedainiai, at Janina Monkute-Marks Museum-Gallery. For the first time in the history of the Museum, an impressive Exhibition opening ceremony took place in an open air, at the main entrance to the Museum.

The authors of the Exhibition Indre Stulgaite-Kriukiene and Remigijus Kriukas have been working with glass for several decades. The artists together organize personal exhibitions and participate in joint glass art exhibitions, projects, and art glass symposia. Currently, both artists live and create in Panevezys, Art Glass Studio “œGlasremis” (www.glasremis.lt) founded in 2000 by Remigijus Kriukas.

Glass is a versatile, multifaceted matter containing a mysterious, additional dimension – transparency, optics; it enchants and attracts with an illusion, telling more than it is possible to say in words. This exceptionally specific area with a lot of technological features – not to mention the fact that glass is a particularly delicate matter – joins and unites the two creators but also differentiates them as they both have a different, distinctive style, a unique creative experience and speak different ways in the creative language. By implementing their creative ideas, the artists constantly experiment, delve into the technological peculiarities and try to make optimal use of the possibilities of this exceptional material.

Remigijus likes bigger dimensions, uses self-specific, personal techniques, combines the details molded in some kind of way with a transparent, optical glass and creates a rather distinctive and interesting style. The author combines optical glass with a sheet, cut and polished glass. This is a personal style that has already been formed and admired by glass art lovers. The artist often balances at the limits of technological possibilities; between something that is possible and impossible. This in particular surprises glass art connoisseurs; huge sculptures made using a hot free-form method looks like they go beyond all the imaginary limits of possibilities. The artist prefers the following technologies: molding of glass, hot glass forming, blowing and glass combinations with stone or metal.

Indre’s works are smaller in size. Emphasis is placed not only on the aesthetic aspect of the work but also on its existential ideas. An emotional expression of the creation is important for the author. Her works have many symbolic forms well-recognizable for the viewer (house, ship, human silhouette, etc.), thus aiming at touching the soul of the viewer, and at encouraging them to stop and think. In recent years, the field of the artist’s interests has expanded to additional glass concepts: sound, technological processes, even specific scent of glass. All this becomes a work of art, when the viewer perceives the work in several different senses – smell, sight, hearing, and even the vestibular apparatus. Favorite technology is hot-glass molding, as well as grinding, polishing of glass and its combinations with other materials – wood, stone, or metal.

The viewers of the Exhibition will be welcomed not only by separate sculptures of the authors from the recent years but also by the installation “4 Days in Mars”, which was awarded by the commission and received a lot of positive evaluations from the viewers at the international art fair “œArtVilnius17”. The authors invite the viewer to opt for the thoughts “Between Sky and Earth” by selecting the works disclosing “œearthly” and “cosmic” themes.
