The Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery stores about 600 pieces of chamotte ceramics created during 19 International Ceramic Symposiums that took place in the city. The one and only collection in Lithuania reflects the international trends of contemporary ceramics, as well as the works of Lithuanian artists.

Panevėžys International Ceramic Symposium has been organized since 1989 as a continuation of National symposiums initiated by Alvydas Pakarklis in 1983. In 1990, the Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery undertook responsibility for the planning and organization of the symposiums in cooperation with Panevėžys Glass factory (later AB “Panevėžio Stiklas”), and from 2006 – in cooperation with the ceramics company “Midenė”. The resulting work technique is high temperature combustion sculptural ceramics suitable for indoor as well as outdoor conditions.

Panevėžys International Ceramic Symposium is distinguished by a unique position among the events devoted to ceramics in Lithuania. It is the oldest and purposefully working creative “laboratory” of ceramics. It is the only venue for the gathering of professionals in a working environment where art is produced. Original and interesting artists are invited to take part and interact during the Symposium. The time spent together among artists with different ethnic and cultural background provides the opportunities to understand the principles and ideals which cannot be perceived from the means of mass media or a written word. Working side by side opens the way for sharing ideas and learning about artistic standards and philosophies from the other countries of the world.

The nineteen symposiums to date have been attended by 149 artists from 32 different countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The collected works stored and exhibited by the Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery are of significant artistic and historic importance. The Gallery maintains a presence in cultural activities by not only collecting and exhibiting works in site but also presenting them in national and international venues. The Gallery exhibits the collection locally and strives to initiate or join projects with other exhibition centers in Lithuania and foreign countries (the U.S., Austria, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Latvia).

The excellent reputation and longevity of the symposium, as well as the positive ceramic art publications in Lithuania and foreign countries (Australia, Germany, Greece, France, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan and the U.S.) is largely a result of a careful and thorough organization and planning by the Civic Art Gallery.

The goal of the Symposium organizers is to have a functioning international ceramic center where the collection serves as a visual reference accessible to all individuals interested in the ceramic arts.

Under this beautiful initiative, the collection of Panevėžys International Ceramic Symposiums shall be exhibited in Janina Monkutė-Marks Museum-Gallery during the period of September 6 – October 12, 2013. The Exhibition includes the pieces of art created by seventeen different artists. The Exhibition visitors shall be delighted by sculptures produced by the following author: Juris Bergins (Latvia), Eugenijus Čibinskas (Lithuania), Ilze Emse-Grinberga (Latvia), Yu-ying Huang (Taiwan), Jurgita Jasinskaitė (Lithuania), Juozas Lebednykas (Lithuania), Lluis Soler Llambrich (Catalonia, Spain), Kęstutis Musteikis (Lithuania), Frederick L. Olsen (U.S.), Paulien Ploeger (Holand), Egidijus Radvenskas (Lithuania), Aldona Skudraitė (Lithuania), Sergey Sorinsky (Russia), Annika Teder (Estonia), Billie Jean Theide (U.S.), Rimas Visgirda (U.S.). The Exhibition is also complemented by original plates by Valdas Pukevičius (Lithuania) – the participant of the 19th Panevėžys International Ceramic Symposium, some of which have been exhibited in the Exhibition “MORASS” organized by the Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery.
