“Draugas” daily celebrates 100
It is hard to believe that last July 12th a Lithuanian daily newspaper “Draugas” in Chicago celebrated 100 years. And what a celebration for a newspaper that is being published continuously, first as a weekly and after few years as a daily. Back in 1909, no one even thought that “Draugas” will live through two World Wars, Lithuania’s first independence, occupation and finally reestablishment of free country of Lithuania and that the front pages will print every important event in Lithuania’s history throughout the newspaper’s existence.
Presently, “Draugas” is being read in all five continents by Lithuanians living there.
In our everyday life we take the newspapers for granted and never imagine, when we throw them away, that we are throwing away part of our history. This is what the exhibit is all about – the historical moments frozen in time – the front pages headlines and photographs.
It is a fitting tribute to “Draugas”, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania decided to sponsor the exhibit and it will be shown in many different cities from Vilnius to Klaipeda.
