International Christmas Exhibition “BLACK LIGHT 2 – EXPERIMENTS”
2013 December 13 @ 15:00 - 2014 February 15 @ 10:00
“BLACK LIGHT“ is a contemporary art exhibition which has been presented in various European cities already for several years.
In summer of 2005 a group of Lithuanian textile artists (Laima Oržekauskienė, Inga Likšaitė, Almyra Bartkevičiūtė – Weigel, Jolanta Šmidtienė) were invited to take part in the international exhibition “Advertising Art in the Black Light” in Berlin. There the artists works from various countries were exhibited in the underground station. The Lithuanian presentation stood out not only for their technical variety, individuality and mastery, but also for conceptual engagement. German tutors accepted our artists’ initiatives to try the impact of the black light effect in Lithuania by organising similar exhibition.
At the end of May, 2006, during the Kaunas Days, with the help of the initiative of Jolanta Šmidtienė, textile artists and Kaunas artists guild, the first contemporary art exhibition “Black Light” was organised in Kaunas castle. Here the textile works by more than ten artists were exhibited in the dark. The mysterious and unexpected exhibition received a positive welcome by Kaunas citizens and the visitors of the city. After the successful debut in Kaunas (from May to August, 2006), the exhibition was moved to the Klaipėda Gallery. Later, in the summer, 2007, the collection, supplemented with the new works, was exhibited at the Central Moravia Gallery, in the Brno city, Czech Republic. The spectators of this country presented the interest in the exhibition as well. Consequently, the collection was taken to Pardubice by the gallerists of Praha. At the end of 2007 this exhibition was one of the exhibitions of Kaunas Biennial TEXTILE 07 following events. In 2008, the updated collection of “Black Light” was exhibited in Kedainiai, Janina Monkute-Marks Museum-Gallery, and in 2011, a newly-created international collection “Experiments with Light: the Art Laboratory” was an accompanying project of Kaunas Biennial TEXTILE’11.
After a successful debut of the exhibition “Black Light” in Kedainiai in 2008, we want to please the inhabitants of Kedainiai once again by offering them a new International Christmas Exhibition “Black Light 2 – Experiments”. Since Christmas is a wonderful time of the year full of a mysterious atmosphere, sincere love, well-wishing, attention to people close to you, as well as words of gratitude and a warm family feeling, together with the Textile Artists’ Guild, the Gallery “Balta” based in Kaunas we invite you to this special exhibition. We believe that it will bring a lot of joy, beauty and warm feelings to the Gallery visitors, will create an everlasting magical mood and will become one of the most attractive points of Kėdainiai.
The exhibition is unique because artworks are exhibited in the complete darkness and are only illuminated by fluorescent light. Art objects glowing in the dark space purifies the field of vision leaving additional stimuli aside. Local illumination invites a viewer to closely mingle with artworks. The materials sensitive to luminescence used by the artists endow the artworks with the aura of mystery.
The exhibition includes 39 artists from 8 countries:
