The concept of the exhibition is based on a metaphor meaning a creative, non-standard thinking, based on new ideas, rejecting the old rules, allowed limits and practices; expanding beyond constrained space, as if from the box, to broader field of ideas, thoughts and associations. A Box is a symbol of regulations, limitations and set rules; in English language it also has a figurative idiomatic meaning – “to develop ideas that are different and unusual”. Getting out of the box means an ability to see the world in a different light, in contrast to cliché and routine. However, a box for the Lithuanian people has a direct meaning – it is a chest of drawers where fabrics, garments, handicrafts were kept. If a girl had no dowry in the chests of drawers it was considered a great infamy to the girl and her family. Therefore, harmonizing metaphorical and direct meanings of the box artists are encouraged to open their creation “chests of drawers” to expose their self-expression treasures long hidden from the eyes of the strangers.
What does it mean for the XXI century artist to look creatively at the environment, situations and problems? Flashes of authenticity, eccentric creation capable of evoking emotional stress may get lost in the sea of opinion liberalism, simulacra and old art quotations flourishing in globalization. How to stand out in the chaos of visual ideas and forms? Could it be new forms and techniques of an art piece, unexpected interpretation of the theme, unusual utilization? Or emphasized signs of identity individual self-observation, actualized attitude to human and historical past, expression of eccentricity or intellect? As the concept of originality greatly varies in different cultures, artists from various countries are showing ingenuity of their perception field.
