“TAPESTRY MOSAIC: LITHUANIA – MY FACE” Exhibition

January 14 @ 17:00 - February 26 @ 12:00

In anticipation of the centenary of Lithuanian statehood in 2017, the project “Tapestry Mosaic: Lithuania – My Face” was launched at “Gijų sodai” – a textile studio of the Kaunas Cultural Center. One of the goals of the project was to create a gift to Lithuania – a large-scale artwork from all the small pieces we created.

During the creative workshop, we wove small particles and introduced participants to the technique of weaving old tapestries, why they are known to us as tapestries, who wove them, and why they were translated that way. Participants learned that tapestries were only commissioned by kings, nobles, or other members of the gentry, that tapestry drawings and pasteboards were made by artists, and that only male weavers wove in tapestry workshops. In this project, representatives of all contemporary “classes” were equally involved in the majestic creative process – in WEAVING a piece of fabric, CREATING a drawing for the tapestry and BEING the client who donated the work to Lithuania.

Each participant was invited to express their feelings and thoughts about Lithuania by weaving colors and symbols into a small 8×8 cm piece of fabric, of which up to 950 pieces were joined together to form a large mosaic. About 1000 representatives of different age groups and social classes took part in the project.

In 2020, in anticipation of the 30th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, the creative team of the textile studio joined all the pieces into one large mosaic – a 2×3 m tapestry – and … created a tree of life for Lithuania.

The textile project invites you to get to know the work – the mosaic “Lithuania – My Face” – through interpretation. Graphic artist Aurėja Jucevičiūtė contributed to the project by transforming the mosaic of the tapestry into graphic animations and symbolic paintings.
