At the beginning of June a two-week creative-educational Children Camp for the pupils of Kedainiai Foster Home “Saulute” took place at the museum. During its time children and youth had a unique opportunity to try various artistic techniques. Their works were exhibited at the museum until June 30th and later moved to Kedainiai Foster home “Saulute”.
The museum – gallery wanted to organize a camp of such nature specially for Kedainiai Foster Home “Saulute” children growing up without parental care. The application for the project was submitted to the Embassy of the United States in Lithuania, which had announced sponsorship program “The Spring of American Culture”. The project “Reflections of American Culture at Janina Monkute-Marks Museum: the creative-educational Children Camp” was approved and the funding for project realization was received. The main purpose was to introduce pupils from Kedainiai Foster Home “Saulute” to American culture and its manifestations in the works of Lithuanian diaspora artists while providing them with rewarding pastime during the creative-educational Camp. It also aimed at developing cultural consciousness, initiative and creating conditions for self-expression and realization. To achieve these objectives, three art branches – Pop art, graphics and stained glass – were chosen.
During the time of the Camp pupils from foster home painted on water, carved linoleum, created graphic works, made collages, stained glass works, mosaics and finally went on a trip to Kaunas. Children visited M.Zilinskas Art Gallery, Kaunas Ceramics Museum, T.Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology as well as a graphics gallery of a well-known Kaunas artist Egidijus Rudinskas who himself introduced youngsters to his works and etching technology. We also flew kites near Kaunas Castle. Moments from the camp are captured in photographs, which show children’s faces and eyes filled with joy.
During the time of the Camp the director’s assistant Jovita Buineviciene of Kedainiai Art School and four girls volunteers, who were discovered during the previously carried out Kedainiai district municipality project “Future Museum Open for Youth”, helped children with the Camp’s activities. The work of these assistants largely contributed to the successful project realization.
The exhibition of the selected works was opened at the museum – gallery with a concert on June 15th and was exhibited until June 30th. Later (November 8 – November 30, 2013) the exhibition was moved to the foster home “Saulute”.
